Brushing your teeth too hard can hurt and damage your teeth and gums also using the wrong toothbrush can lead to problems like receding gums and enamel wear, which can lead to tooth sensitivity, states Gene Romo, DDS, a Chicago-based dentist and consumer advisor for the ADA (American Dental Association). “Most People tend to aggressively brush their teeth, thinking that it is the best way they can get their teeth cleaned and white” stated Dr Romo. “That is a counterproductive event, because it does not only cause the recession of gums, but it also wears away the whiteness and glossiness on the teeth enamel which makes it look darker and yellow.” And as a result of this, you are at risk of developing what is known as sensitive teeth.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush: Go for a toothbrush with ADA seal and replace it every three months.
  • Place your toothbrush right: When brushing place your toothbrush at angle 45-degree to your gums, in that way, the bristles will be able to reach and clean under your gum line.
  • Move the brush gently to and fro: Make use of short tooth-wide strokes to clean the inner and outer and the chewing area of the teeth. If you are using an electric toothbrush, just glide it over your teeth lightly instead of pushing it against them. And try and hold the toothbrush in your non-dominant hand.
  • Slow down: Dentists recommend you brush your teeth for two full minutes twice a day. Use a timer on or use an electric toothbrush which can notify you every 30 seconds. It will keep you more aware of brushing aggressively.
