Are you waking up in the morning with sore ribs?
Is you spouse not getting any sleep at night because you are snoring so loudly?
Do you have to go to another room, end up on the couch or in the recliner because of your snoring?
You may think it is funny, but the fact is this scenario is played out every night of the week in some home in the Corona area.
The problem is that most people don’t associate snoring with the serious problem of sleep apnea. They just think it is a normal part of life and they couldn’t be more wrong.
The Not So Silent Killer
Not everyone who snores has sleep apnea, but the majority of those who are chronic and loud snorers do have sleep apnea.
Snoring occurs when the soft tissue in the back of throat falls down into your airway while you are trying to sleep. It either partially or fully obstructs your breathing and oxygen supply.
When the air tries to pass by the soft tissue, it flutters and you make the snoring sound.
Now stop and think about this for a moment. You or your spouse is not getting the airflow and oxygen they need.
Sleep is important to your body as it helps your body heal itself and repair itself. When you fall asleep and enter that deep sleep your body so desperately needs, a series of events begins to occur to refresh and restore your body and mind.
When your body doesn’t have the opportunity to repair itself, it then begins to breakdown and health problems begin to show themselves.
We are hearing it more and more of celebrities and pro athletes that have died as a result of untreated or uncontrolled sleep apnea.
Chronic Health Problems Due To Sleep Apnea
Many patients who have come into our office have been to multiple doctors for various health conditions such as headaches, blood pressure, fatigue, heart problems and more.
They can’t figure out why they cannot get their blood pressure regulated. There seems to be no reason for them to have blood pressure issues but yet they are struggling with it.
As much as we hate to say it, but many times the doctors themselves are not asking the right questions especially about how that patient is sleeping.
If your body doesn’t get the proper rest and you don’t get the deep sleep you need to achieve that rest, your blood pressure will be uncontrollable accept maybe with medication which you will be on your entire life.
Patients that we treat for sleep apnea who have blood pressure issues many times are able to get off their blood pressure medication simply because they are able to sleep again. They also begin to notice other health benefits such as losing weight they have not been able to lose simply because the lack of sleep caused hormone imbalances in their bodies.
